a toast to tomorrow
At the start of our journey we wrote down the values we want to live by at Kyrö. We thought it over in the sauna, of course. We decided we'd behave like decent citizens of this world and do things so that generations after us can enjoy Finnish rye too.
As a result of that sauna night, Kyrö has worked sustainably from the very beginning – socially, ecologically and economically. We're committed to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We focus especially on what affects the planet's carrying capacity, and we do our part to reduce inequality.
keeping energy use to a minimum
Our new whisky distillery runs on biogas produced from pig manure and fish waste that would otherwise go to waste. Today, 99.9% of the energy for the distillery and the Visitor Centre comes from renewable sources.
Hot water is an essential part of distilling, and we reuse it to heat our buildings. The stillage left over from distillation feeds Ostrobothnian cows, and the methanol from the process helps keep the local wastewater clean.
equality at home and beyond
Being local has made us who we are. We found our home in Isokyrö, and from there we take Finnish rye to the world. Locally we support the Isokyrö Ylipää youth association's neighbourly help, which provides food aid to those who need it.
We work proactively with local associations that promote equality, and through our own actions we aim to reduce inequality.
We've long worked with Pertin Valinta, Finland's first social enterprise founded by people with intellectual disabilities, whose profits go to employing people with partial work ability.
more sustainable travel
The ecological and social responsibility of what we do is extremely important to us. Certification is the first stage on a path of continuous improvement, as keeping the certificate depends on progress every year.
That's why we have all sorts of small but important things planned for the future. In summer, for example, you can borrow a bike during your visit to explore Isokyrö's other sights. The bikes are recycled and refurbished by us, and a map of interesting places nearby is in the works.
